Central Coast Film Photographer – Soft, dreamy and luxurious captures of your family
Meet Kylie! She is the gorgeous mama behind Kylie Mills Photography who also happens to be the first photographer to ever take photos of my family. She likes to do things a little differently. You see film photography is her jam, mostly because of the light-filled look this style of photography gives. Her style is what sets her apart today, along with the fact that she’s always looking for those real moments of candour. Her super power is gifting mums with real moments that they can cherish in photographic form forever.
Tell us all about Kylie Mills Photography.
I am a family and motherhood photographer, and I work all over the Central Coast. I am a little different from most photographers, in that I often use old school analogue film to photograph with. Using film gives my work a really unique, beautiful and light-filled look.
What inspired you to start your business?
I have been shooting families for around 7 years now. But I started photographing mothers after becoming a mother myself. I remember so many times with my eldest when she was a baby, when we’d be at home by ourselves just completely in the moment with each other- even on the days when things were tough- when I hadn’t washed my hair in a week, when I smelled of vomit (Addy was a major vomiter), and when I would be counting down the minutes until my husband got home. And I remember thinking how much I wished someone was there to capture the little moments of us just ‘being’, or that I had some visual way to always remember how I felt. They weren’t necessarily beautiful moments- just real moments, but I so badly wanted to hold on to them and remember them.
This, more than anything has shaped me as a photographer. When I’m shooting a mother, I’m always looking for the real moments. When she truly relishes in the moment and forgets that I’m there entirely. Sometimes it’s when her little one is upset and she needs to comfort them. Sometimes it’s when her baby reaches out spontaneously to touch her face. And sometimes it’s when she’s being tackled by all three of her children. But I freaking love those moments! And I love that I can give those moments to these beautiful mums to hold onto forever.
Tell us about the process of starting Kylie Mills Photography.
I never really had a moment when I ‘started’ my business. It evolved into a business over time as I became more serious about photography and fell in love with photographing families more and more.
What is your most popular service?
My mini motherhood sessions are always really popular. They are simple, love-filled sessions that produce magical and timeless images of mothers and their children. They capture mothers in their element – radiating love and beauty while soaking in the wonder of their babies.
How does your business cater to mums and their families?
I really believe that investing in thoughtful and beautiful family portraits is so important! I bet that on the phone of every mum reading is 1000’s of photos of their kids. And I know from experience that we’re never featured in those photos ourselves. I want to give mums and their babies photos that they’ll look back on and treasure in 10 or 20 or 50 years’ time because they are present in them!
What do you feel makes your offerings different from others?
Shooting with film definitely makes my work and my process different to others. I choose to shoot film because the beauty of film, for me, knows no bounds. Film has a soft, dreamy and luxurious quality to it. Light, colours, texture, skin tone and movement are so beautifully captured by this medium. It can turn any scene into something magical. It fuels the fire in my belly and I am utterly devoted to it!
Shooting film has made me a better, more competent photographer. It completely slows down my process and forces me to think about each shot. Each frame is exposed with thought and attention to detail. I love feeling like my images are created, and not just ‘taken’.
Describe how you feel when a customer books a session with you.
I do a literal happy dance every time I book a session! I often have to pinch myself that it’s my job to capture the beautiful moments I get to witness. I’m so thankful to each mother and family that ask me to witness their personal lives so intimately.
What’s something about your business that people may not know?
I am completely self-taught. In photography and in running a business. I wish I could go back and tell my 19-year-old self to study visual arts at uni instead of history!
What are you most proud of in your business journey so far?
That I’m still here, loving every minute of my photography journey, even after 3 children haha! Seriously though, I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve given tangible memories to so many mothers to hold onto and cherish.
What do you love most about your business?
I love and am so thankful for the fact that I can run my business from home while caring for my kids. These years with them are so precious to me and I wouldn’t want to give them up for anything. I’m so lucky to be able to stay home with them every day and work on my business on weekends and during their downtime. I don’t take it for granted.
What’s next for Kylie Mills Photography?
After taking a year-long break during my third pregnancy and Olive’s first 6 months of life, it’s now back to business and I’m really looking forward to meeting lots of new mums and families on the Central Coast this year! I hope the business continues to grow and I continue to catch the eye of mothers who really value my work and photography in general.
What is your favourite thing to do when you get some alone time?
Oh my gosh, just sit! haha!
ABOUT KYLIE AND KYLIE MILLS PHOTOGRAPHY
I am a wife, and a mum to three little girls- Addison, Charlotte and Olivia- who are all under 5! We’re originally from Sydney but moved to Booker Bay a year ago. We love it here and can’t believe it took us so long to discover the beauty of The Central Coast. Our days (when I can find the energy to get out of the house) are spent discovering new bush walks and beaches we haven’t yet visited. My life as a mum has lead me to photographing other mums for a living- this is my hobby and my passion!
